Sited in the south of people square, the geographic center of Shanghai, the Shanghai Museum is the key component of the civic building program in Shanghai. The museum sits on the south end of an organizing axis running from north to south, while the new City Hall locates on the north end. In concert with the geographic and architectural characters of the site, the building has a symmetry northern facade of columniform, and a streamlined southern facade incorporating with the massive curve of the Yananlu Viaduct passing on the south of the site. The axis culminates in a large rotunda, which is the anchor of the complex. Twelve showrooms of various sizes scatter radiantly around the rotunda. The proposal won the second price of this competition.
